About

Welcome to Episcopal City Mission’s website. Here you will find information on ECM’s current programs, people, history and vision. Incorporated in 1844 with a generous gift from Episcopal entrepreneur William Appleton, ECM has developed a legacy of partnerships with the parishes in the Diocese of Massachusetts, community organizers and the people of our communities for long term structural social change. In recent years ECM has invested significant resources in affordable housing, including the expansion of the Morville House in the Fenway, grants to parishes seeking to develop affordable housing in their communities, grants to community organizers promoting affordable housing and the expansion of a network of parishes and people working to end family homelessness in this commonwealth.

ECM’s mission is to work for the economic wellbeing of the urban poor as an expression of God’s grace. As a friend of ECM has said:

This is the group of Episcopalians in the Diocese of Massachusetts who pride themselves on not being distracted by anything else but helping the poor and housing the homeless and making sure that the resources of this Commonwealth can somehow be shared with everybody”.

State Representative Byron Rushing, former ECM Chair, introducing ECM to the keynote speaker, Governor Deval Patrick at the ECM 2007 Annual Meeting.
